BEYOND US

Beyond Us presents a series of works by Marco Barotti that explore how sound can connect art and science. As coral reefs reach an irreversible global tipping point in October 2025, Barotti’s works call for renewed attention and care toward the ocean. Installed underwater, his sculptures play recordings of healthy reefs, creating acoustic habitats that attract marine life and aid ecosystem recovery. Powered by solar energy, these sculptures are part of his artistic investigation that includes audiovisual works combining underwater imagery, shamanic chants, animations, and electronic soundscapes.

Developed with marine biologists Timothy Lamont and Antonio Beggiato, the project builds directly on research published in Nature Communications (Gordon et al., 2019) demonstrating how “acoustic enrichment” can accelerate reef regeneration. Barotti draws on ancient traditions of singing and listening to nature, merging them with contemporary technologies. Together, these works invite us to perceive sound as both research and ritual: a shared language between human and more-than-human worlds.
